It is the beginning of the year, and the time to be in Venice. Like so many who travel to this part of north Italy, we were amazed by the gondolas. Many tourists were there for the popular and touristy boat ride. I was there to explore the world of gondoliers beyond it.
One of the most romantic images around might just be of a gondolier in his trademark black pants and striped top, singing out Italian love songs as he navigates love-struck couples through the canals of Venice.
The experience is complete with the waterways and singing men, replicating a true romantic movie scene.
In Venice, today gondolas might be engaged to give visitors a unique experience, but they were used nearly a thousand years ago to transport wealthy citizens through the lagoons. The gondoliers were their chauffeurs, and before faster and cheaper motorboats became a mainstay in the mid-20th century, Venetians in the city used the flat-bottom boats to get around.

Em Veneza, hoje gôndolas podem prestar serviços aos visitantes, tranformando a experiência em única. Mas eles foram usados quase mil anos atrás transportando cidadãos ricos através das lagoas. Os gondoleiros eram seus motoristas , e antes de lanchas rápidas e mais baratas se torna um esteio em meados do século 20 , os venezianos na cidade usavam os barcos como forma de locomoçao por volta da cidade.
